What do you own versus what do you control?

In traditional manufacturing, enterprise value was historically measured by square meters of real estate, machinery, and physical inventory. However, modern global business demonstrates that a commanding market position rarely relies solely on heavy asset ownership. The most durable leverage increasingly stems from intangible capital which are contracts, proprietary information, financial structuring, and strategic networks. The core question of modern strategy is no longer “What do I own?”, but rather “What do I control and what position do I command?”. Locking up excessive capital in fixed assets severely restricts liquidity and agility when market conditions pivot. Enduring business power today is derived from governing knowledge and capital flows rather than carrying an overleveraged balance sheet.
