The geopolitics of critical minerals and the return of protectionism

The push toward electrification and advanced technology has forged a volatile industrial dependency. Replacing hydrocarbons, geopolitical leverage now centers on lithium reserves, battery-grade nickel, cobalt and rare earth processing capacities.

Usporedba klasičnog industrijskog pogona (nafta, čelik, plin i otvorene burze) i novog tehnološkog pogona (rijetki metali, litij, poluvodiči, koncentracija prerade i carinske blokade)

The extreme geographic concentration of refining infrastructure has weaponized basic raw material supply chains into geopolitical instruments. Open multilateral commerce is retreating under export quotas, aggressive tariffs and industrial protectionism. Operating companies face recurring risks where foundational components become suddenly unavailable or structurally overpriced.

Securing sovereign and dependable supply corridors now supersedes chasing spot-market price discounts. Geopolitical exposure can no longer be treated as an external tail risk. It is an active variable within every commercial balance sheet.
